The Higher Secondary School Certificate, also known as HSC, is a public examination taken by students of Intermediate College (Junior college) in Bangladesh, Pakistan and in the states of Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra and Goa in India. The examination structure differs from board to board. But in the most of the boards, they are subjective examinations. HSC is equivalent to GCE A Level in England. Exams for this take place twice a year in February-March and October-November.

The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka is an autonomous organization, mainly responsible for holding two public examinations (SSC & HSC) and for providing recognition to the newly established non-govt. educational institution and also for the supervision, control, and developments of those institutions.
The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka was established on 7 May 1921 according to the recommendation of Sadler Commission. Intermediate colleges and high schools in Dhaka city and Islamic intermediate the colleges and high madrasah of greater Bengal were under the control of that board. An advisory board made by the director of the public education department of greater Bengal was given the authority to govern the board.
The Government of Bangladesh places great importance on education and in this regard, the Government has been trying to transform its huge population into human resource. Education for All (EFA) is the constitutional responsibility of the government. The constitution affirms equal rights in education for all. Considering this, the government has emphasized on providing education to the backward population and its female citizens. The government is providing free education up to HSC (Class- 12) for the female along with the stipend. It is expected that this will contribute to enhancing the enrollment rate of the female students, decreasing the rate of dropouts and enriching the country with an educated mass.
