Institute of technology is a designation employed for a wide range of learning institutions awarding different types of degrees and operating often at variable levels of the educational system. It may be an institution of higher education and advanced engineering and scientific research or professional vocational education, specializing in science, engineering, and technology or different sorts of technical subjects. It may also refer to a secondary education school focused in vocational training. The term institute of technology is often abbreviated IT and is not to be confused with information technology.

Dhaka Polytechnic Institute is the oldest Polytechnic Institute in Bangladesh. It was established in 1955 with only 120 students in the first year classes of Diploma-In-Engineering in four technologies, namely, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and power with the growing demands of mid-level technical manpower home and abroad the Institute has since greatly expended. The Institute now offers courses in Eleven technologies.In early 1955, Ford Foundation established Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, with a duration of 3 years long courses, based on the syllabus of Oklahoma State University, Still Water, USA. The certificate issued by the then Technical Board Education was "Associated in Engineering" having provision to undergo B.S course in USA and also in U.K. Its formation and academic course history details goes back to the birth of Ahsanullah Engineering College, which is now known as BUET.
To cope up with increasing magnitude of academic activities, the need for establishment of a "Statutory Board" was keenly felt. A statutory body namely "The East Pakistan Technical Education Board" was established through Act. No. 1 of 1967 of the then East Pakistan Assembly, which is now Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB).
Thus the Bangladesh Technical Education Board came into existence with the jurisdiction over the entire area of Bangladesh to organize, supervise, regulate, control and develop technical and vocational education. The Board in its present form became operative with effect from June 1969.
